Member Embarks on a milestone voyage

On March 10, 2010 President Obama declared South Dakota, and other Midwest states to be in a state of emergency due to rampant floods caused by snow melting too quickly after the massive “snowpocalypse” of 2010. Calls for help from FEMA and other national relief organizations were made to anyone who could come to the Midwestern states and assist in the recovery and preparation for what was still to come. Local resident, advocate and member of the Cecil County Young Democrats, Kevin Miksis of Rising Sun, decided to take a part in this relief action through a program at Harford Community College. Miksis and five other students from Harford Community College participated in an “alternative spring break” and traveled to Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota to help Olgala Lakota Native American People with projects such as re-building homes, and fixing up old poverty stricken homes. When asked, Kevin states that he greatly enjoyed the eye opening experience, and feels that it has opened him up to future service projects locally and throughout the county.

The Young Democrats are very proud to have Kevin as a member of our organization, and look forward to him leading us to future service projects on a local level!
